St Michael's Mead and A1184 by-pass

St Michael's Mead is a housing development on the outskirts of Bishop's Stortford. The photos show how the houses have swallowed up open countryside near Thorley.

The view in 1994.	The black barn has given way to new houses.

Open countryside which is to become the St Michael's Mead housing development.	The field and barn have given way to the housing development and the lane is now for cyclists and pedestrians only, a small tree has survived.

This photo shows a temporary route for construction vehicles at Thorley in 1994. The field with the sheep in it is to become the A1184 by-pass.	The route for construction vehicles has gone but the trees have survived on both the before and after photos. What was a field to the right of the tallest tree is now the A1184 Bishop's Stortford south western by-pass.

This photo (taken in 1994) shows the road from Thorley church.	The road from Thorley church in 1999, the A1184 by-pass now goes under the road here in a cutting. The house has survived on both the before and after photos.
